Having been a sailor and avid racer of both sailing dinghies and offshore sailboats since the age of seven, Cortland Steck graduated the New York Institute of Technology in 1976 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, after which he continued to expand his studies and in 1979 graduated the Westlawn School of Yacht Design.
