Founded by Harry Melges Sr. as Mel-Ban Boat Works in 1945 and Melges Boatworks in 1948. Harry Melges son, Harry Jr., better known as Buddy, is one of the best-known racing sailors in the world.
In October 2025, Melges was purchased by Cate Muller-Terhune and Allan Terhune Jr.
